WASHINGTON − President Donald Trump denied reports he had reached out to Tehran seeking an end to the five-day Iran-Israel air war, after earlier suggesting he was working toward a broad Iran nuclear deal.

“Iran should have signed the ‘deal’ I told them to sign. What a shame, and waste of human life,” Trump posted on Truth Social as he left the G7 summit in Canada. “Simply stated, IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON. I said it over and over again! Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!”

When Israel launched its series of strikes against Iran last week, it also issued a number of dire warnings about the country’s nuclear program, suggesting Iran was fast approaching a point of no return in its quest to obtain nuclear weapons and that the strikes were necessary to preempt that outcome.

Whether the U.S. gets more involved than it already is, some members of Congress from both parties argue, should not be up to the President.

Syria was once among the closest allies of the Islamic republic, but the new government resents Tehran’s support for the Assad regime and has pledged not to allow attacks on Israel from its territory.

Israel and Iran have begun a new round of attacks, as the conflict between the two heavily armed rivals enters its fourth day.

The conflict has killed hundreds and wounded more than a thousand since Friday in Iran and killed at least 24 and injured hundreds in Israel. The attack on Iran came amid protracted talks between the U.S. and Iran centered around Iran’s nuclear program.
