What is the Chikungunya virus? Chikungunya virus is a disease propagated by infected mosquitos, with outbreaks frequently occurring in South and South East Asia, as well as certain regions of Africa.
Cases of chikungunya fever are rising in southern China, prompting local authorities to take measures to curb its spread.
The virus was first identified in Tanzania in 1952. It then appeared in other countries in sub-Saharan Africa and South-East Asia. To date, it has been reported in more than 110 countries.
