President Trump called for Iran’s “unconditional surrender” as Israeli officials pushed the United States to use its huge bunker-busting bomb against an underground nuclear facility.

Shapiro served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Middle East until January—charged with, among other things, considering scenarios in which tensions between Israel and Iran escalated into all-out war and preparing U.

The conflict has killed hundreds and wounded more than a thousand since Friday in Iran and killed at least 24 and injured hundreds in Israel. The attack on Iran came amid protracted talks between the U.S. and Iran centered around Iran’s nuclear program.
