LONDON — A small plane crashed at London Southend Airport, police said Sunday. In a statement, Essex Police said it was alerted just before 4 p.m. local time to the “serious incident” at the relatively small airport, which is around 45 miles east of the capital.

Aerial pictures showed the aftermath of a plane crash at London Southend Airport. Essex Police said it was alerted to a 12m (39ft) plane on fire at the site shortly before 16:00 BST on Sunday. Footage taken from a helicopter showed a large area of charred ground and the remains of the aircraft.
